Subspecies & Plumage

The Ornate Lorikeet is currently considered monotypic (no recognised subspecies), though some regional colour variations exist across Sulawesi and the Togian Islands.

Key Plumage Features

This small lorikeet is highly ornate with a complex pattern of colours. It has a bright blue crown and nape, red breast with yellow markings, green body, and blue flight feathers. The face often shows red and yellow streaks, giving it a very detailed and artistic appearance. The beak is orange-red, and the eyes are bright orange.

Juveniles are much duller with less defined markings and dark eyes that gradually brighten. This species is known for being active, agile, and relatively quiet for a lorikeet.
