Subspecies & Plumage

Several subspecies are recognised, differing mainly in the extent of black on the cap and intensity of red and blue:

Subspecies Main Range Key Differences

L. l. erythrothorax Southern New Guinea Slightly smaller with more extensive red on the breast.

General Plumage Notes: The Black-capped Lory has a brilliant scarlet-red body with a solid black cap, bright blue thighs, and green wings with blue flight feathers. The contrast between the black head and red body is very striking. Juveniles have duller red plumage and brownish caps.
