Subspecies & Plumage
Two subspecies are recognised, differing mainly in size and intensity of coloration:

General Plumage Notes: Adults have a dusky maroon to chestnut-brown body with bright orange-red on the breast and underwing coverts. The tail is vivid yellow-orange, and the flight feathers are deep blue-black. The eyes are striking orange-red. Juveniles are duller with brownish eyes that gradually turn brighter.
